Hmm. I’ll actually take issue with this…
I’ll admit- the US is likely among the highest armed countries in the “developed” world (though I’d wonder about some countries like switzerland where military service is mandatory and the civilians then keep their arms). But otherwise I’d argue this is more a matter or records then reality. (hell- I can name 10 countries on that list where virtually every single household outside the major cities has military grade automatic weapons. And within the major cities almost every household does- or has hired guards who do.
Having travelled a great deal I have seen countries where EVERYONE is armed. And I have seen open air sales at the markets of everything from the ubiqutous AK-47 to RPG’s to much heavier armarments.
And of course- millions of americans own guns for no purpose other then hunting. Or pleasure (such as tarket/trap/skeet shooting).
Are americas gun laws ****** up? You bet. But this chart is just ridiculous. Some of it is semi-honest- related to very strict gun laws. And some of it it ridiculous- related to strict gun laws but ignoring the fact most citizens own guns illegally- and the law enforcement, such as it is, doesn’t care.
Interestingly enough, the group that made the chart is called Small Arms Survey located in Switzerland.
In the introduction, they cover the points you make. But the conclusion is the same – ‘While the US has only 5% of the world’s population it has between 35% and 50% of the world’s civilian firearms’.
I don’t disagree with you but when one considers that we, America is the land of the free, the shinning beacon of freedom and owning 35 to 50% of the civilian guns in the World while only having 5% of the Worlds population…..
