“All bow to the NRA and the fear and hate they spread that stopped common sense” – ‘Senate Sets Flurry of Crucial Votes on Gun Measures, Some Expanding Rights’
To preface……
I’m a gun owner.
None of the legislation pending would in any way ‘infringe’ on my Right to own a weapon.
Some would however, place RESPONSIBILITIES on gun ownership.
Maybe, just maybe THAT is what is scaring the so called 2nd Amendment fanatics.
RESPONSIBILITY.
When the Newtown killings first happened, I hoped that at the very least we’d put in place criminal and medical data bases combined with a ‘universal’ background check system.
I was also hoping to ban some of the military assault style weapons and clip size.
An AR-15 with 30 round clips is not for ‘protection’ but rather offensive weapons.
The argument that ‘criminals won’t follow the law’ misses two points.
#1 that is the point as criminals will then be limited in where to get weapons and #2 – if criminals don’t/won’t follow the law – why have any laws?
But to me, the biggest point of gun legislation is the 2nd Amendment –
“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed”.
-It seems very clear to me that the Founding Fathers would have no problem with us ‘regulating’ the ownership of weapons.
Everyone seems to forget the first part of the Second Amendment.
At any rate, it now seems we won’t even be able to get a watered down, loophole ridden ‘back ground check’ through the Senate much less the House.
So to the 6 adults and 20 children murdered in Newton and the countless others that are murdered in America, the Greatest Nation on Earth, I am sorry we failed you.
Well the people we elect to represent us, who take millions of dollars and countless perks from business and the wealthy so make excuses on why they are not going to protect (cough) we the people.
They are the ones who failed you.
We are just to cowardly to vote them out.
Excellent as usual!!!
Many humble thanks.

I was a gun owner until this past January, then I decided that owning something that kills thousands each year, made my skin crawl. Let me also add I am ex military. This is a great post FatherKane. Thank you.
Really well said. I don’t think we can all write nearly enough about how our spineless, greedy, morally challenged Senate let us all down today.
Now if our writing turns into action – i.e. voting some of the 45 Senators out.
I fear it will end up as it has in the past, “throw the bums out, except for my guy, he’s ok.”
I agree completely. Add that to gerrymandering in the House and the more things change, the more they stay the same.
