Water every third day for Puerto Ricans as drought approaches historic levels

Repeating Islands

Amid one of the worst droughts in Puerto Rico’s history, the government has ramped-up drinking water rationing for 200,000 users in the San Juan area, restricting households to water every third day.

Rainfall deficits have been mounting since 2013, drying up rivers and streams at a record-breaking pace and making the possibility of fires a genuine concern.

The situation in Puerto Rico is nevertheless much more complex than just a lack of rain, according to Eric Holthaus, a meteorologist who writes about weather and climate for Slate’s Future Tense.

In May, which is traditionally one of the wettest months of the year in the US island territory, Governor Alejandro Padilla issued a state of emergency over the drought, which he blamed partly on the island’s struggling economy and the low priority given to water storage by previous governors.

Water rationing is nevertheless thought likely to worsen the fragile economy, currently…

Here in Spok-A-Loo, we are going to get into the triple digits this weekend.

Not a big thing….usually except that Spokane’s average temperature is around 73 this time of year and we also have two major sporting events.

Hoopfest – the biggest (correct me if I’m wrong) 3 on 3 basketball tournament and over in CDA -Iron Man.

Iron Man has already adjusted the starting times moving it up two hours and Hoopfest has gobbled up all of the misting fans they can find as the temps in downtown Spokane with the buildings and 50,000 to 75,000 spectators will climb into the 120 range.

Blog Running History – “The White Man’s Flag”

This is the ‘proud heritage’ you are defending?

‘This is the national flag of the Confederacy as it existed from the Spring of 1863 until just weeks before the end of the war in 1865. Note that this flag was adopted not long after the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation’.

‘Why was it called the “White Man’s Flag”?

  • Well, because that’s the name given to it by the guy who designed it, William T. Thompson, the editor of the Savannah Morning News (then known as the Daily Morning News)’.

‘Actually born in Ohio, Thompson designed the flag and editorialized on its behalf repeatedly in the paper he edited’:

“As a people, we are fighting to maintain the heaven ordained supremacy of the white man over the inferior or colored race; a white flag would thus be emblematical of our cause.”

‘And then in a later editorial, he cheered the design as one that will :

“be hailed by the civilized world as THE WHITE MAN’s FLAG.”

‘And then finally :’

“As a national emblem it is significant of our higher cause [,] the cause of a superior race, and a higher civilization contending against ignorance, infidelity and barbarism.”

‘This actually echoed, albeit less eloquently the infamous words of Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens who argued that white supremacy was the foundation upon which the Confederacy was built’.

“Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea [to that of the United States Constitution]; its foundations are laid, its corner- stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth.”

‘A recent study by the Violence Policy Center found that for every justifiable homicide performed by a “good guy with a gun,” there are 32 criminal homicides committed by “bad guys” with guns’.

‘Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) plans to make it easier for people in his state to buy guns’.

  • Walker intends to sign two pieces of gun legislation, including a bill that eliminates a state-imposed 48-hour waiting period for people planning to buy firearms, at a ceremony at the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s office Wednesday afternoon’.
