The System and More

This is a long ranting post.

A friend on facebook could not understand why people were having a problem with the Army of Northern Virginia’s Battle flag (you know the one, the one South Carolina flew over their capital until recently, the one they have flying at full mass as of last night.) After all it is only about southern pride, Lenard Skinnard and all that. So I am going to do a little correcting in the best southern way I know how. First off, I am from the southern part of the US of A. So I am not a yankee. I was raised on cornbread, and black eyed peas, and hawg jaw, (no grits though, Momma thought grits were nasty). I was raised with people being called Colored and less attractive words. I was raised with “n” rigging and “jewing” someone down. I was raised Southern. I was…

How To Feed The Religious Fanatic Republican Base – ‘Mike Huckabee Pledges To Block Gay Marriage If Elected President’

‘Yesterday, Mike Huckabee chatted with Iowa radio host Steve Deace and Religious Right organizer Bob Vander Plaats, who led Huckabee’s 2008 campaign in the first-in-the-nation caucus state, about the Supreme Court’s upcoming ruling on gay marriage’.

‘He said that if elected president, he would simply ignore any Supreme Court decision in favor of marriage equality until Congress passed legislation legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide…which he would then veto’.

“There can be no surrender on the point of the Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriage,” Huckabee said, claiming that the ruling “goes to the heart of who we are as Americans and whether or not religious liberty lives or dies.”

He vowed not to “surrender to a tyranny that frankly would defy everything we are as a country,” lamenting that even people who went to law school have decided to “acquiesce to this judicial supremacy.”

“All it takes is one blind good guy with a gun…..” – ‘Iowa Grants Permits For The Blind To Acquire Or Carry Guns In Public’

But to drive a car in Iowa, you have to have a license. And to get the license… havew to pass a vision test.

But for carrying a gun?

No teast…..No license….Just a gun.

‘The state of Iowa is now granting permits to acquire or carry guns in public to people who are legally or completely blind’.

‘The legality is not at issue since Iowa law does not allow sheriffs to deny an Iowan the right to carry a weapon based on physical ability but concerns of public safety are’.

‘WTSP reports’:

  • “The quandary centers squarely on public safety. Advocates for the disabled and Iowa law enforcement officers disagree over whether it’s a good idea for visually disabled Iowans to have weapons”.
  • WTF2

“On one side: People such as Cedar County Sheriff Warren Wethington, who demonstrated for The Des Moines Register how blind people can be taught to shoot guns. And Jane Hudson, executive director of Disability Rights Iowa, who says blocking visually impaired people from the right to obtain weapon permits would violate the Americans with Disabilities Act. That federal law generally prohibits different treatment based on disabilities”.

“On the other side: People such as Dubuque County Sheriff Don Vrotsos, who said he wouldn’t issue a permit to someone who is blind. And Patrick Clancy, superintendent of the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School, who says guns may be a rare exception to his philosophy that blind people can participate fully in life”.
