Debunking Republican (FOX (cough) ‘news’) Lies – ‘Science or Spin?: Assessing the Accuracy of Cable News Coverage of Climate Science’

fox news on airplane1

‘CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC are the most widely watched cable news networks in the U.S. Their coverage of climate change is an influential source of information for the public and policy makers alike’.

‘To gauge how accurately these networks inform their audiences about climate change, UCS analyzed the networks’ climate science coverage in 2013 and found that each network treated climate science very differently’.

  • ‘Fox News was the least accurate; 72 percent of its 2013 climate science-related segments contained misleading statements’.

‘CNN was in the middle, with about 33% of segments featuring misleading statements’.

‘MSNBC was the most accurate, with only 8% of segments containing misleading statements’.

‘Fox News: Misleading Most of the Time’

‘Fox News covered climate science 50 times in 2013’.

‘Of these segments, 28 percent were entirely accurate, while 72 percent included misleading portrayals of the science’.

‘More than half of Fox’s misleading coverage (53%) was from one program, The Five, where the hosts often instigated misleading debates about established climate science’.

‘In general, Fox hosts and guests were more likely than those of other networks to disparage the study of climate science and criticize scientists’.

‘Fox News did show an improvement from a UCS snapshot analysis of Fox News coverage in 2012, in which the network’s coverage was entirely accurate in only 7 percent of segments, while 93 percent contained misleading statements’.

‘To further improve accuracy, the most productive step Fox News could take would be for hosts and guests to better differentiate between scientific facts about climate change and political opinions about climate policy’.

Debunking The Republican Lies – ‘Gingrich: Remove All Donation Limits To ‘Equalize The Middle Class And The Rich’

newt gingrich

What is completely lacking in ALL conversations I’ve heard since this decision is that instead of debating how much or who gets what, we should be debating to remove ALL money from campaigns.

  • Money has completely corrupted our political process and policies.

Simply making it easier to peddle influence isn’t going to improve our politics or Government.

Someone I knew once made the statement that Gingrich was ‘astute’.

Just on the surface……how dumb do you expect your audience to be to accept the premise that the middle class and the rich – in terms of money – are equal?

Just think about it. If I was really, really passionate about some candidate, I could scrap together $1,000.

That’s pocket change to the Koch brothers.

Rich people, by the very definition, have more money then we in the middle class.

  • Taking away limits does not make us ‘equal’, it gives more power to the wealthy.

Yeah, Newt is ‘astute’ alright.

‘Speaking on ABC’s “This Week,” Gingrich cited the 1976 decision Buckley v. Valeo, which first equated with money with speech and said that to limit certain contributions was tantamount to limiting freedom of expression’.

‘Gingrich said that “you’ve gone from that original decision to Citizens United, which said, in effect, that corporations could give and created super PACs. Now you’ve said they’re unlimited.”

‘Gingrich added, “The next step is the one Justice Clarence Thomas cited — candidates should be allowed to take unlimited amounts of money from anybody. And you would, overnight, equalize the middle class and the rich.”

Why America Is Failing – ‘The less Americans know about Ukraine’s location, the more they want U.S. to intervene’

america failing

How is it possible to have an opinion and not even know the geography?

We are talking global economics, intertests, historical contaxt and possible military action.

‘Our results are clear, but also somewhat disconcerting: The less people know about where Ukraine is located on a map, the more they want the U.S. to intervene militarily’.

‘On March 28-31, 2014, we asked a national sample of 2,066 Americans (fielded via Survey Sampling International Inc. (SSI), what action they wanted the U.S. to take in Ukraine, but with a twist’:

‘In addition to measuring standard demographic characteristics and general foreign policy attitudes, we also asked our survey respondents to locate Ukraine on a map as part of a larger, ongoing project to study foreign policy knowledge’.

‘We wanted to see where Americans think Ukraine is and to learn if this knowledge (or lack thereof) is related to their foreign policy views’.

‘We found that only one out of six Americans can find Ukraine on a map, and that this lack of knowledge is related to preferences’:

‘The farther their guesses were from Ukraine’s actual location, the more they wanted the U.S. to intervene with military force’.

A ‘Christian’ Republican World – ‘Again, Christianity The Last To Get It Right’

jesus stearns

HD Christian Images a new dimension of Christian imagesGeorge Samuel design

‘Eleven years ago, Richard Stearns went to Washington’.

‘Stearns — president of World Vision, the billion-dollar Christian relief organization — joined other faith leaders in lobbying Congress to spend $15 billion combating AIDS in Africa and the Caribbean’.

‘He acknowledged he and his fellow evangelicals were late to the fight against this pandemic and explained their tardiness with remarkable candor’.

‘At first, he said, Christians perceived AIDS as a disease of gay people and drug users and so, “had less compassion for the victims.”

  • ‘This, from followers of the itinerant, first-century rabbi who said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened …”

‘So Stearns’ words offered stark illustration of one of the more vexing failings of modern Christianity: its inability to get there on time’.

‘On issues where it should take the lead, where it should make noise and news, challenging the status quo, marching in the streets, actively advocating for human dignity…..

And yet ‘the great body of Christendom always seems to bring up the rear, arriving decades late to the place the rest of the nation has already reached’.

  • ‘It’s not just that delegation joining the AIDS fight nearly 25 years after it began’.
  • ‘It’s also churches apologizing 30 years after the Civil Rights Act for supporting segregation’.
  • ‘And Christian tardiness in standing up for the right of women to be freed from kitchens’.

‘All of which provides a certain context for a recent controversy’.

On March 24, World Vision announced it would no longer bar Christians in same-sex marriages from working there. In an interview with Christianity Today, Stearns took pains to say this was no endorsement of those marriages — only a decision to opt out of the argument. “We have decided we are not going to get into that debate.”

Two days later, almost 5,000 of his sponsors having abandoned him, Stearns was backpedaling like Michael Jackson singing Billie Jean’.

‘He reversed the new policy, calling it a “bad decision” made from “the right motivations.”

‘And you know, don’t you, that 20 years from now, Stearns or whoever has his job by then, will reverse the reversal and struggle to explain — again — why so many people of faith were the last to get there’.
