Penny’s Secret Weapon
Mitt doesn’t really do that.
It’s just another (cough) ‘Newsmax’ headline to suck in gullible teabaggers.
But Mitt DID say something very interesting…..
First of all, Idaho is a ‘welfare’ State. It gets back more in Federal taxes then it pays in. In other words, it needs other States to help pay for it’s programs.
But back to Mitt. Here’s what he said……
“I’m here today in Idaho . . . to make sure people understand that the people I’m standing with right here are the right team of conservative leaders to help the people of Idaho,” Romney said, according to NPR’.
“I also acknowledge that they are men of character and vision, and they’ve done a heck of a good job,” Romney said. “And if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” (1)
If it ain’t broke….don’t fix it?
Exactly how does Mitt define ‘broke’?
‘BOISE – Idaho has the worst wages in the nation’.
Remember……..Mitt Romney says – “And if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
Wanna look at what a Republican State really looks like?
Take a real good look.
‘The Famous Potatoes state ranks 50th for average annual wage, per-capita income, and for wage increases since 2007’.
‘It also has the greatest percentage of minimum-wage workers in America’. (2)
‘Despite Idaho’s many attributes, it ranks at the bottom (or top) of several unflattering lists’.
‘Rankings out of 50 states’
‘Average per-pupil spending: 49’
‘Salary of classroom teachers: 42’
‘College enrollment after HS: 47’
‘College graduation rates: 44’
‘Attainment of BA degree (age 25 or older): 40’
‘Attainment of advanced degree: 42’
– (From the National Center for Education Statistics
and the U.S. Census Bureau)
‘Breast cancer screenings
Rank: 51/51 for lowest rate’.
‘Health care professionals’
‘Physicians in patient care’:
‘Idaho rank: 49’
‘Rank: 7th for highest incidence rate, 14th for highest death rate (2003-2007)’.
‘Rank: 11th highest suicide rate (2007’)
‘From 2007-2009, Idaho suicide completions increased by 40 percent’.
‘Rank: 10th lowest coverage rate’
‘Median Household Income’
‘Idaho is among the bottom 10 states for average personal and household income’.
‘Gender Wage Gap’
‘Idaho women working full-time, year-round jobs in Idaho earn 78 percent of their male counterparts’ income’.
‘Increase in Families on Food Stamps’
‘The number of people on government nutritional assistance programs has increased faster in Idaho than elsewhere in the country, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture statistics’.
‘”We have 1,600 job openings in our system today, statewide,” Fick said. “And there’s 65,000 people that are unemployed, 7,000 who dropped out, 40,000 working part-time. So there’s a lot of competition for the handful of jobs that are out there.”

‘When Washington residents voted in 1998 to raise the state’s minimum wage and link it to the cost of living, opponents warned the measure would be a job-killer. The prediction hasn’t been borne out’.
‘In the 15 years that followed, the state’s minimum wage climbed to $9.32 — the highest in the country’.
‘Meanwhile job growth continued at an average 0.8 percent annual pace, 0.3 percentage point above the national rate’.
‘Payrolls at Washington’s restaurants and bars, portrayed as particularly vulnerable to higher wage costs, expanded by 21 percent’.
‘Poverty has trailed the U.S. level for at least seven years’.

‘Washington state, for example, has the nation’s highest rate, $9.32 an hour. Despite dire predictions that increases would cripple job growth and boost unemployment, this isn’t what happened’.
‘At 6.6 percent, the unemployment rate in December was a click below the U.S. average, 6.7 percent, and the state’s job creation is sturdy, 16th in the nation, according to a report by Stateline, the news service of the Pew Charitable Trusts’.
‘At the Olive Garden in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho, the spaghetti and meatballs are about $1.70 cheaper than at the Olive Garden about a half-hour away in Spokane, Washington’.
‘That may be explained by Idaho’s lower minimum wage, taxes, land costs or something else’.
‘A restaurant spokeswoman would only cite vague costs of products and of doing business in various locations. Whatever it is hasn’t stopped Olive Garden from operating two restaurants in the Spokane area’.
‘Bruce Beckett, government affairs director of the Washington Restaurant Association, said he wasn’t aware of any restaurants bailing out of Spokane for Idaho. He said he had heard anecdotes about local restaurateurs buying cheaper supplies in Idaho — fairly small potatoes’.
‘Two bakeries moved across the border a few years ago, said Robin Toth of Greater Spokane Incorporated, a Chamber of Commerce and economic-development organization, but she said those businesses cited Washington’s taxes, not its higher minimum wage, as the reason for doing so’.

What the CBO report actually said :
‘According to the report, a $10.10 minimum wage hike would boost the weekly earnings of an estimated 16.5 million hourly workers and reduce the number of Americans in poverty by 900,000. In addition, the report provided a range of job-loss estimates. While the central estimate is 500,000 jobs lost, there is a two-thirds chance that a $10.10 minimum wage would create anywhere from a slight reduction in workers to a reduction of 1 million’.
‘Elmendorf said this also means there is a roughly one-sixth chance that a $10.10 minimum wage would add zero or more workers to the economy, and likewise that there is a one-sixth chance it could subtract more than 1 million workers’.

And the economists :
“Under current labor market conditions, where tepid consumer demand is a major factor holding businesses back from expanding their payrolls, raising the minimum wage can provide a catalyst for new hiring. Economists generally agree that low-wage workers are more likely than any other income group to spend any additional earnings they receive, largely because they must in order to meet their basic needs”.
@ : –David Cooper, Economic Policy Institute “Raising the Federal Minimum Wage to $10.10 Would Lift Wages for Millions and Provide a Modest Economic Boost,” Dec. 19, 2013.
“The minimum wage has little or no discernible effect on the employment prospects of low-wage workers. The most likely reason for this outcome is that the cost shock of the minimum wage is small relative to most firms’ overall costs and only modest relative to the wages paid to low-wage workers. . .”

I live in Washington State.
In 1998 we passed legislation to begin raising our minimun wage.
The same fear mongering came from the Republicans then.
We now have the highest minimum wage in the Nation. So we should have the highest unemployment rate too.
Washington Stgate’s unemployment rates goes between 30 and 25th in the Nation.
The resturant industry saw an increase, yes increase of 21% in their labor force.
Raise The Wage.
Start Helping The Middle Class Instead Of Making Excuses Why You Can’t.
‘And in Ryan’s own state, 87 percent of workers affected by the proposed minimum wage hike are older than 20, while nearly a quarter-million children would see their family income rise thanks to a $10.10 minimum wage’.
‘The majority of low-wage workers who would benefit from raising the minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 per hour are not in fact teenagers getting a foothold in the workforce, but rather grown-ups with rent, medical bills, and often children’.
“The typical worker who would be affected by an increase in the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour by 2015 looks nothing like the part-time, teen stereotype,” according to the Economic Policy Institute’.
ELKHORN, WI — ‘Raising the minimum wage would destroy the entry-level opportunities that young Americans need to start “climbing the ladder of life,” Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) said on Thursday at a town hall meeting’.
“The majority of these workers are younger people just getting into the workforce,” Ryan said. “What we don’t want to do is support ideas, especially in this kind of economy, which will reduce the availability of jobs, number one, but more importantly reduce the availability of jobs from the very people we want to get into jobs so they can start climbing that ladder of life, so they can get in and start working their way up and get the skills they need to earn a better job.” He added that his time working at McDonald’s as a young man helped “give me better training to keep moving on in life.”
My pick right now is that the Democrats will lose a net of 5 seats in the Senate giving them 48. Add the 2 Independents and with VP Biden’s vote will hold the Senate for the Democrats.
But…….In the 113th Congress, all the Democrats needed was 5 Republicans to over turn a filibuster. Getting 10 Republicans to vote against a Republican filibuster will be impossible.
President Obama’s only job in the last 2 years of his Presidency will be to use the veto pen.
That will be his legacy.
Sadly for American, it will mean 2 full years of stagnation.
On the up side, in two years, Hillary will take the White House, Democrats will gain back the Senate, possibly getting even 60 seats, and what’s left of the teabaggers will be a small group of wild eyed fanatics – their usual members – giving 5 minute speeches on the House floor that no one pays any attention to.
‘Americans for Prosperity, a Koch-backed group, has spent up to 10 times as much as the Senate Majority PAC, quickly becoming one of the biggest players in this year’s election’.
WASHINGTON — ‘Senate Majority PAC, a group that supports Democratic Senate candidates, is preparing a $3 million advertising campaign against Charles G. Koch and David H. Koch, the libertarian-minded billionaire brothers who support conservative causes and have already poured millions of dollars into the 2014 midterm elections’.
‘The group’s effort will last for roughly two weeks and span five states — Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, Michigan and North Carolina’.
‘In an attempt to combat the Koch brothers’ influence, the $3 million buy will nearly match what Senate Majority PAC has spent on all of its other television ads so far this cycle, around $3.6 million’.
Creationism is not science. Creationism is 1, count them 1 religion’s faith in how we came to be.
‘Creationists held a pity party for themselves Thursday because “Cosmos” isn’t being fair and balanced to their beliefs’.
“Creationists aren’t even on the radar screen for them, they wouldn’t even consider us plausible at all,” said Danny Falkner, of Answers In Genesis, which has previously complained about the show’.

‘It was only a matter of time’.
‘At 5:42pm ET on Thursday, March 20th, Andrea Tantaros became the first Fox News host to discover a comparison between the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 and the 2012 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya’.
‘After playing a montage of the reactions from loved ones of the people on board Flight 370, host Kimberly Guilfoyle imagined what it must be like for these people to still have no idea what happened to the passengers nearly two weeks later’.
“Think how long it took for them to get this kind of media attention,” Tantaros added. “I mean, living in Malaysia, the government seemingly ignored these people, they didn’t want their stories to get out. They weren’t talking to them.”
‘After warning co-host Bob Beckel to plug his ears lest he explode with rage, Tantaros said it “feels like the families of Benghazi, just saying. And we’re better than that.”

”60 Minutes’ Reviewing Benghazi Story Over Witness’ Conflicting Accounts’
NEW YORK — ‘CBS’ “60 Minutes” announced Thursday night that it’s reviewing a controversial Oct. 27 report on the attack on the U.S. compound in Benghazi, Libya, to determine if its eyewitness, security officer Dylan Davies, “misled” the network. “60 Minutes” said it had “learned of new information that undercuts” the harrowing account given on air’.
‘The New York Times reported Thursday that Davies previously told the FBI that he was not at the U.S. compound on the night of Sept. 11, 2012 — an account that directly contradicts his “eyewitness” statements on air’.
‘Attkisson also confirmed she’s working on a book about how stories are reported in the media’.
“I’ve been wanting to write about the unseen influences on the media by coordinated, paid factions, whether they’re from political, corporate or other special interests, the tactics they use to manipulate the images we see”.
