‘MediaMatters for America compiled several reports that show how raising the minimum wage would cut down on the number of people receiving certain types of government assistance’.

‘One of those is from Center for American Progress, which says that raising the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour would save $4.6 billion annually, simply because of the corresponding drop in enrollments’.

‘According to UC Berkeley’s Labor Center, fast-food workers, whose average wages are below $10.10 per hour, cost taxpayers nearly $7 billion each year’.

‘Fast-food workers overwhelmingly rely on Medicaid, CHIP, food stamps, and the Earned Income Tax Credit to make ends meet’.

‘Ft. Myers, Florida’s local NBC affiliate reported on UC-Berkeley’s study, but the national NBC network appeared to ignore it’.

‘CBS has done many reports on various aspects of the minimum wage and of the social safety net, but not on the public cost of low wages’.

‘The top result on Google for “ABC + public cost of low wages” (below the news items) is their story on the CBO’s report that raising the minimum wage could cost 500,000 jobs’.
