‘The Year In Guns: What Has Happened — And What Has Not — Since Newtown’

‘One year ago, the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary began a nationwide debate about gun violence prevention. The conversation that followed led to at least three new national groups advocating for reform, 23 executive actions signed by President Obama, and stronger state gun laws protecting roughly half of Americans. To the disappointment of anti-gun violence advocates, Congress failed to pass a single reform addressing the 6 million gun purchases that slip through a weak background check system.

Here is a look at where gun violence and the movement against gun violence stand one year since Newtown’:

‘At least 27, after yesterday – now 28 – school shootings: Between the Sandy Hook shooting and December 4, there were 27 other school shootings that caused at least 20 injuries. According to the group, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, they occurred in’ :

‘194 children killed: A Mother Jones analysis found at least 194 children under 12 have been killed since the Sandy Hook shooting. Most children were killed at home, accidentally or due to domestic violence, because of a gun kept in the house. The average child was 6 years old’.

‘1,500 state bills introduced: According to the New York Times, of the 109 bills that passed, 39 promote gun violence prevention, while 70 loosen the law to allow guns in schools, bars, or exempt concealed carry from background checks, and more. Nine laws passed by states loosen restrictions of guns in schools: Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee. North Carolina, Kansas, and Arkansas made it easier to bring guns onto college campuses, as well’.

’23 executive actions and 1 bill passed by Congress: Obama signed 23 executive actions promoting gun safety earlier this year. The Senate failed to pass background checks legislation, making Congress’ only action this year reauthorizing the Undetectable Firearms Act, which bans plastic firearms that go unnoticed by a metal detector’.

‘189 million people: By a Mother Jones count, 189 million people live in states that strengthened gun laws since Newtown, and 185 million live in states that weakened them’.

‘More than 225,000 advocates join anti-gun violence groups: Reform advocates have joined forces post-Newtown in at least three new groups, indicating a growing national movement for reform. Moms Demand Action For Gun Sense and Gabby Giffords’ Americans for Responsible Solutions together count more than 225,000 members. Another 274,000 have signed the Sandy Hook Promise advocating for gun violence prevention’.

‘$1.8 million: The Center for Responsive Politics showed $1.8 million spent on federal lobbying for gun violence prevention this year, nine times the amount as the year before. The National Rifle Association and its allies still outspend the other side on lobbying, however, doubling its spending to $13 million’.

‘5 million: In May, the National Rifle Association reported it grew to more than 5 million members. It did not report how many members withdrew over the NRA’s position against gun violence bills, but there was some public backlash’.

Holiday (GRINS!) Blog Running – ‘The Right Wing Watch Christmas Gift Guide: Gifts For Your Favorite Preppers, Tea Partiers & Obama Impeachers’

happy holidays

happy holidays1

happy holidays2

‘We here at Right Wing Watch aren’t always fighting the War on Christmas. In fact, we’ve positively gotten into the Christmas spirit as holiday gift suggestions from all of our favorite right-wing groups come flooding into our inboxes. So we’ve decided to put together a gift guide for those of you who are still looking for the perfect gift for your favorite conservative loved one’.

7. ‘Religious Right Reads’
‘Intellectual honesty has never been a great concern of many Religious Right authors, which is why we recommend you get a signed copy of David Barton’s “The Jefferson Lies,” a book so error-ridden that it was pulled off bookstore shelves by its publisher’.

6. ‘Prepper Blowout Sales’
‘For the prepper in your family, WorldNetDaily and similar shops offer such stocking stuffers as 20 pack dust masks, a home-made paracord survival bracelet and — for beginners — an emergency survival kit in a sardine can’.
‘Depending on your budget, you can prepare for the apocalypse by splurging for a $150 bucket of black bean burgers or just buy a packet of freeze-dried ice cream sandwiches to celebrate the end of the world’.

5. ‘Say Merry Christmas Or Else’!
‘Make sure to get that special someone a “Say Merry Christmas” button or bracelet, because there is nothing obnoxious about a person walking around a Christmas party wearing a button that simply reads, “Say Merry Christmas.”

4. ‘Let Your Kid Ride A Dinosaur Like The Early Humans Did A Few Thousand Years Ago’
‘Give your child the gift of education this year by taking them to the Creation Museum, which it will be hosting “New Christmas Town.”
“New this year will be the opportunity to ride a zip line over the museum’s scenic, three-acre lake” (just like the Three Wise Men), or you can put your kid on a dinosaur with a saddle, just like in the old days’.

3. ‘Sarah Palin Gold Coins’

‘Not only has Sarah Palin become a top lieutenant in fighting the War on Christmas, but now the reality TV star/former governor is the face of a coin collection from Alaska Mint. You can find Sarah Palin medallions in bronze, silver and gold. But at least the medallions will help a worthy cause: Alaska Mint says that “a donation from the sale of these medallions will be made to Wounded Warrior Project.”
‘If that isn’t enough, there’s always the Sarah Palin Bobblehead doll’.

2. ‘Hip Cool Homophobic Bumper Sticker’

‘The anti-gay activists over at MassResistance are tired of seeing the Human Rights Campaign’s equality bumper sticker everywhere, but now they have a solution. “[L]ike the ‘equal’ sticker, the ‘not equal’ sticker is suitable for all kinds of creative uses,” the group writes on its website’.

1. ‘Impeach Obama Playing Cards’
‘As we know, Christmas is a time of year for families to gather around the dinner table to discuss ways to impeach President Obama. And WorldNetDaily is now offering us a fun way to do that, with a new card game that lets players “create the best cases for impeachment by collecting and displaying valuable evidence (Case) cards,” such as “Benghazi,” “ACA,” “IRS” and “Complicit Media.”

“People are drifting apart, and games are a great way for family and friends to get back together,” an ad for the game says, because playing a card game about impeachment certainly won’t lead to any family arguments or spats. “Don’t just use it as a status symbol, play it and have some fun.”

Not Conservative Enough – ‘Glenn Beck: Boehner’s ‘Worthless’ and McConnell’s a ‘Liar’

beck not consercvative enough

beck not conservative enough

Beck doesn’t carry the same weight as Rush but speaks to the further right wing nut cases.

How hard, far and weel funded will the Republican absolutists teabaggers (RAT) go in pushing the Not Conservative Enough agenda?

Will they hand Democrats yet more victories in the Senate and maybe even in the House?

‘Conservative radio talk show host Glenn Beck took to the airwaves to lambaste the Republican leadership in Congress, calling House Speaker John Boehner “worthless,” and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell a “liar.”

‘Speaking Thursday on the Mark Levin radio show, Beck lashed out against the GOP establishment leaders, referring to them as “big government progressives.”

“I think John Boehner is one of the prime examples of worthless, worthless Republicans. All these people saying, ‘Hey, the Republicans aren’t so bad.’ No. I think they actually might be worse, because they claim to be something that they’re not,” Beck said.

‘Levin labeled Boehner “utterly feckless,” prompting Beck to go a step further, saying, “People like John Boehner have got to go.”

“I will not vote for another Republican who is just a Republican who says, ‘Well, you know, we got to do what we got to do.’ No we don’t, we have to take a stand,” Beck said, adding that conservative GOP Sens. Mike Lee of Utah and Ted Cruz of Texas are examples of lawmakers who have taken a stand’.

“They’re heroes,” Beck said. “Meanwhile, the John Boehners and the Mitch McConnells of the world are trying to take Ted Cruz and Mike Lee and destroy them. Mitch McConnell is the biggest two-faced liar I’ve ever seen. I’m sorry; I have no respect for them.”

Republican and the Religious Right Hate, Fear and Loathing – ‘Rick Santorum Drops Strange, Death-Filled Description Of Nationalized Health Care’

rick santorum

‘Speaking at a Young Americans for Freedom event Friday at the Reagan Ranch, Rick Santorum said this’:

“If we have a system where the government is going to be the principal provider of health care for the country, we’re done. Because then, you are dependent on the government for your life and your health…When Thatcher ran for prime minister she said — remember this, this is the Iron Lady — she said, ‘The British national health care system is safe in my hands.’ She wasn’t going to take on health care, because she knew once you have people getting free health care from the government, you can’t take it away from them”.

“And the reason is because most people don’t get sick, and so free health care is just that, free health care, until you get sick. Then, if you get sick and you don’t get health care, you die and you don’t vote”.

“It’s actually a pretty clever system”.

“Take care of the people who can vote and people who can’t vote, get rid of them as quickly as possible by not giving them care so they can’t vote against you. That’s how it works.”

The Republican War On Women – ‘Michigan women will now have to purchase ‘rape insurance’ to get an abortion’

war on women

Republican Rape insurance.

‘The Republican-dominated Michigan state legislature pushed through a bill on Wednesday requiring women to purchase separate insurance policies if they want to have an abortion, the Detroit Free Press reported’.

“I don’t think elective abortion should be a part of insurance,” state Rep. Nancy Jenkins (R) told the Free Press. “This doesn’t affect access to abortion. It will still be legal when this law takes effect. Who should be required to pay? Not Michigan taxpayers.”

‘However, the law, which takes effect in early 2014, will also ban women from purchasing the policy after becoming pregnant under any circumstances, including rape and incest, causing opponents to refer to it as a policy on “rape insurance.”

New Birther Conspiracy Theory – Another Donald Trump Edition – ‘New Trump birther rant suggests Hawaii health director killed to hide truth’

Ya knew it was coming!!!!!

‘In a bizarre tweet today, even by his standards, Donald Trump appeared to suggest that someone had the State Health Director of Hawaii, Loretta fuddy, murdered’.

‘Because she was the one who verified President Obama’s birth certificate as real’.

‘Or as Donald Trump refers to it: “birth certificate” (between scare quotes)’.

‘Fuddy did in fact die in a plane crash, and she did in fact verify the President’s birth certificate. But come on’.

‘Trump has a long history of pushing birther theories (the notion that President Obama wasn’t born in the United States and thus isn’t entitled to be president)’.
