‘Kentucky Senator Rand Paul has become a favorite
target of MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow and others this
week after some adept research discovered that
portions of two speeches he gave while campaigning
for Ken Cuccinelli here in Virginia’:
WASHINGTON — ‘Senator Rand Paul, the Kentucky
Republican who is among his party’s top 2016
presidential prospects, has found himself accused
‘But this case has an odd twist. Mr. Paul appears
to have lifted words for a speech this week from a
Wikipedia entry about a futuristic movie,
“Gattaca,” which imagines a world with a population
that has been genetically engineered’.
‘For his own part, Senator Paul offered a defense
to the charges that, even as someone who has often
been supportive of him, I must say is kind of
‘Paul said during an interview with Fusion that he
sufficiently credited the movies rather than
Wikipedia and that his speeches are not supposed to
be meticulously footnoted academic papers’.
“We borrowed the plot lines from ‘Gattaca,’ the
movie, and I gave credit to the people who wrote
the movie,” the potential 2016 presidential
candidate said. “Nothing I said was not given
attribution to where it came from’.
‘Paul misses the point, of course. Nobody is saying
that he was stealing anything from the people who
created either Gattaca or Stand And Deliver, all he
did was use a discussion of the plots of both
movies to illustrate a point he was trying to make
in his own speech’.
‘There’s nothing new about that, and nothing wrong
‘ Making references to movie or televisions plots,
sports teams, the lyrics or popular songs, or any
other number of cultural icons’.
‘That really isn’t the issue’.
‘The problem, as Maddow shows in both of the pieces
above, is that his speech essentially took the plot
summaries of both movies that are on Wikipedia and
copied them word for word’.
WASHINGTON – ‘The Senate today failed to overcome a
GOP filibuster of the nomination of Patricia
Millett to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the
District of Columbia Circuit’.
‘Millett is the first of President Obama’s three
nominees to fill vacancies on the court; Professor
Nina Pillard and Judge Robert Wilkins have both
been approved by the Judiciary Committee and are
awaiting floor votes’.
‘Every Republican senator except for Senators
Collins and Murkowski voted to continue the
filibuster of Millett’s nomination, although none
presented any objection to her qualifications or
‘Since insurers have begun informing beneficiaries
that their health care plans do not meet the new
federal requirements of Obamacare, and will be
either cancelled or significantly altered, the
media has profiled countless middle class Americans
who claim that the new health care law will force
them to pay more for coverage’.
‘So before you buy into the sticker shock hysteria,
here are four questions you should ask’:
1. ‘What does the old plan actually cover’?
‘Most of the policies in the existing individual
health care market — which are currently issuing
notices — offer low premiums, but also come with
skimpy benefits and high out-of-pocket costs’.
‘These plans often have low limits for outpatient
treatment, hospitalization or don’t offer any
benefits for procedures like colonoscopy,
chemotherapy or mental health treatment’.
‘Insurers market these policies to young and
healthy people who don’t use their coverage — and
never know the true extent of their benefits’.
‘(The market is also fairly mobile, with just 17
percent of individual subscribers purchasing the
same plan for two years or longer.)’
‘2. ‘Did this person go to the exchanges’?
3. ‘Yes, the premium is low, but what are the
co-pays and deductibles’?
4. ‘Does this person qualify for subsidies’?
‘Americans between 100 and 400 percent of the
federal poverty line ($46,000 for an individual, or
about $78,000 for a family of three) qualify for
tax credits under the law’.
‘Six of the 7 million individuals who are expected
to sign up for insurance through the exchange will
receive an average tax credit of $5,290 per year’.
Because of a Republican filibuster, 60 votes were
WASHINGTON — ‘Senate Republicans Thursday
successfully blocked the nomination of Rep. Mel
Watt to head up the federal agencies overseeing the
real estate industry, only the second time a
sitting member of Congress has had a nomination
blocked since before the Civil War’.
‘Only Sens. Richard Burr and Rob Portman broke
ranks and voted for the North Carolina Democrat’s
nomination to head up the Federal Housing Finance
Agency, which oversees Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac’.
This is not funny.
Ted Cruz and his father are ‘true believers’.
‘In April, Rafael Cruz, the father of Sen. Ted Cruz
(R-Texas), spoke to the tea party of Hood County,
which is southwest of Fort Worth, and made a bold
declaration: The United States is a “Christian
‘Insisting that the Declaration of Independence and
the US Constitution “were signed on the knees of
the framers” and were a “divine revelation from
God,” he went on to say’,
“yet our president has the gall to tell us that
this is not a Christian nation…The United States of
America was formed to honor the word of God.”
‘Seven months earlier, Rafael Cruz, speaking to the
North Texas Tea Party on behalf of his son, who was
then running for Senate, called President Barack
Obama an “outright Marxist” who “seeks to destroy
all concept of God,” and he urged the crowd to send
Obama “back to Kenya.”
‘Deborah Cavallaro is a hard-working real estate agent in the Westchester suburb of Los Angeles who has been featured prominently on a round of news shows lately, talking about how badly Obamacare is going to cost her when her existing plan gets canceled and she has to find a replacement’.
‘She says she’s angry at President Obama for having promised that people who like their health plans could keep them, when hers is getting canceled for not meeting Obamacare’s standards’.
“Please explain to me,” she told Maria Bartiromo on CNBC Wednesday, “how my plan is a ‘substandard’ plan when … I’d be paying more for the exchange plans than I am currently paying by a wide margin.”
‘Her current plan, from Anthem Blue Cross, is a catastrophic coverage plan for which she pays $293 a month as an individual policyholder’.
‘As for a replacement plan, she says she was quoted $478 a month by her insurance broker, but that’s a lot more than she’ll really be paying. Cavallaro told me she hasn’t checked the website of Covered California, the state’s health plan exchange, herself. I did so while we talked’.
So rather then actually check to see, you decided to go on TV and just blame Obama?
‘If she wanted to pay less, Cavallaro could opt for lesser coverage in a “bronze” plan’.
‘She could buy one from the California exchange for as little as $194 a month’.
‘From Anthem, it’s $256, or $444 a year less than she’s paying now’.
‘That buys her a $5,000 deductible (the same as she’s paying today) but the out-of-pocket limit is lower, $6,350’.
‘Office visits would be $60 for primary care and $70 for specialties, but again with no limit on the number of visits’.
‘Factor in the premium savings, and it’s hard to deny that she’s still ahead’.

‘Small Government’. Less Regulation.
Republicans telling women what they can and can’t do with their bodies.
I guess the ‘small government and less regulation is for men only……
‘A panel of three Republican judges, all of whom were appointed by President George W. Bush, granted the state of Texas’ request Wednesday night to reinstate a law that will force many of the state’s abortion clinics to close their doors’.
‘The order, authored by Judge Priscilla Owen, grants a temporary stay of a lower court judge’s decision blocking a provision of Texas law that requires abortion providers to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital in order to perform abortions at clinics’.

Of course there are no actual ‘crimes’ to even suggest an impeachment but it’s a teabagger after all so anything to make President illegitimate.
‘Each member of Congress has been gifted a copy of the book “Impeachable Offenses: The Case For Removing Barack Obama From Office,” courtesy of Texas Republican Rep. Steve Stockman, according to a press release’.
“I hope this book helps convince my colleagues to hold Barack Obama legally responsible for his disregard for the law. When told of his offense, Obama sought to cover them up rather than accept responsibility and correct the mistakes,” Stockman said in a statement’.
