‘Safety Nets’

See the Paul Ryan budget and then read this from Zander Versus The Stupid :

‘This Easter Sunday, the NY Times has this Jason DeParle story on red states shredding welfare safety nets and the people who keep falling through them’.
‘Faced with flat federal financing and rising need, Arizona is one of 16 states that have cut their welfare caseloads further since the start of the recession — in its case, by half. Even as it turned away the needy, Arizona spent most of its federal welfare dollars on other programs, using permissive rules to plug state budget gaps’.
‘The poor people who were dropped from cash assistance here, mostly single mothers, talk with surprising openness about the desperate, and sometimes illegal, ways they make ends meet. They have sold food stamps, sold blood, skipped meals, shoplifted, doubled up with friends, scavenged trash bins for bottles and cans and returned to relationships with violent partners — all with children in tow’.

‘And as any conservative can tell you, this is working 100% as intended.  If those on welfare turn to crime, then it’s clearly permissible to cut welfare even further to stop coddling these criminals, and then of course pass those savings through tax cuts on to the Almighty Job Creators, who will then certainly create more jobs and uplift these broken souls back into society.  Any time now, those jobs will be just pouring out.  Yep’.

Journalism – From the class of Mike Wallace to ‘Greek salad’

‘A Greek journalist came under fire from angry protesters while on-air on Friday night after hosting a show featuring a spokesman for the far-right political organisations Golden Dawn the previous week. According to local reports, protesters broke into the TV studio, hurling eggs and yoghurt at news presenter Panagiotis Bourchas shortly after 9.00pm’.

I don’t know why but I have a sudden urge to go to Fox.

When politicians talk about ‘cutting entitlement programs’, think about this :

Entitlements aren’t an either or proposition. They aren’t ‘do’ or ‘don’t’. Not everyone, in fact the majority won’t, save up or invest to have a Million Dollars when retirement comes.

We don’t live in a ‘perfect World’ so people make mistakes, make the ‘wrong’ decision that require that they need ‘help’.

Just imagine if this was you or someone you knew, loved, cared about……

‘Imagine being an elderly person on Social Security and President Romney announces there will be a 40 percent cut in your payments. Then your local government announces that your electricity will be cut off if you can’t pay your property taxes. That’s what austerity looks like in Greece. That’s why Dimitris Christoulas, a 77-year-old retired druggist, killed himself in a public square this week, clutching a suicide note’:

“The occupation government … has literally wiped out my ability to survive, based on a respectable pension which I had paid for during a 35-year period. I find no other solution for a dignified end before I start sifting through garbage to feed myself.”

Republican Cut – Cap & Balance – NOT Paying it Forward

Below is an article about job openings and why our economy isn’t recovering fast enough.

There are two sides.

If our economy was having great growth say at 5%+ and unemployment was down to say 4% – then we could take the time and debate who is responsible for the training.

Government. The individual. Or business.

But our economy ISN’T growing at 5%. We DON’T have 4% unemployment and businesses are starting to need workers but the workers aren’t always trained in the fields opening up.

And here is THE difference between Liberals and Conservatives.

Conservatives believe that the private sector will spur our growth. And it will IF and WHEN we have the workers. But we DON’T have the trained workers in place. And the private sector WON’T spend to invest in training them. They did invest in the 50’s and 60’s and our Country BOOMED. But not anymore. Now business is only concerned about the bottome line.

The Liberals on the other hand want to invest in training AND infrastructure. The Global economy has shifted. Our economy has shifted. We need to invest in a new and different future.

And since the private sector WON’T invest, then Government has to.

This ISN’T our Father’s and Mother’s Country. Too bad. They understood ALL of our efforts were building a Great Country. Instead of today’s privatge sector, building Isolated Empires of Wealth.

‘With the economy slowly reviving, an executive from Atlas Van Lines recently visited Louisville, Ky., with good news: the company wanted to hire more than 100 truck drivers ahead of the summer moving season’.
‘But a usually reliable source of workers, the local government-financed job center, could offer little help, because the federal money that local officials had designated to help train drivers was already exhausted’.
